Baseball Betting Odds and Lines

Baseball betting is much different than other traditional sports like football. Mainly that’s due to the closeness of most baseball games. Unlike football where scores can be quite wide, most baseball games are settled by just one or two runs. That means having true, over and under or point spreads are useless for betting on baseball.

Baseball, and a few other sports, placed odds in a different way. Bookmakers use what’s called a money line for betting on baseball. The money line is the amount of money that must be placed in the amount of money that one when wagered on either of favorite war on underdog. A negative money line is for the favorite team, a positive money line goes to the underdog. The money line is based on a $100 bet. If a favored team has a -140 money line, the bettor would have to wager $140 in order to collect a $100 profit if they win. If wagering on an underdog with a +120, a bettor would wager $100 and get $220 if the underdog won.

Baseball also uses the run line for wagering. Sports books create the run line when one team is a heavy favorite. Under the run line a number of runs will be subtracted from the score of the favorite team. Usually, that number is between 1 1/2 and two runs. The run line is as close to a point spread as in other forms of sports betting. The run line is a relatively new concept in a stalled betting. It is often used to even out the odds between two teams. It should be noted, betting on a favorite using the run line method often times makes the favorite the underdog in the sports book.
