Health and Safety Measures Not Significantly Affected By Recession, Says CIOB

The recession has not curtailed health and safety measures in the industry, according to statistics collected during a survey by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). The study took into consideration some 1,260 working professionals as respondents.

A significant number of top-level professionals employed in the construction industry credit their companies with adopting a serious approach to health and safety issues. They claim that their companies comply fully with relevant regulations in this area. This is contrasted by a much smaller percentage of people (12.65) who think that attention to these aspects has been waning over the past year due to recession. However, one third of the respondents said that their companies have continued to spend more and more money on health and safety over the same one-year period. These endeavours and expenditures have encompassed training sessions also.

The respondents said that improving awareness levels about risks and dangers and about prevention mechanisms to stay safe at work would help to reduce the number of industrial accidents further. Training and awareness programmes must be conducted at regular intervals for all employees irrespective of their levels of employment.

Almost half of the respondents said that the safety regulations were appropriate and necessary, while 24% emphatically dismissed any charges of over regulation by stating that in this area there is no question of excessive regulation. However, many of these professionals felt that higher participation and involvement of HSE is needed, which can lead to better progress in this area.
