Terengganu Open Concludes with an Upset Win in the Finals
Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, a former All England champion, was surprisingly defeated in the finals of the Terengganu Open badminton tournament held at the badminton courts of the State Stadium on Saturday. The badminton guru lost to Kuan Beng Hong in the men’s singles event.
It was a closely contested two game affair with Beng Hong of BAM/KD prevailing over his BAM/SL opponent in thirty minutes. The score was 21-18, 21-17.
Beng Hong earned 4,000 Malaysian ringgit for his winnwith his while Hafiz settled with the 2,000 Malaysian ringgit prize money.
In the men’s doubles, Chew Choon Eng of PG and SL’s Chan Chong Ming outlasted KL’s Goh Wei Shem and Vountus Indra Mawan 21-13, 21-19. The winning duo received RM6,000 while the defeated pair received RM2,000.
The women’s events were also exciting as well with KL’s Lydia Cheah Li Ya beating PG’s Tee Jing Yiu 21-14, 21-19. She won RM2,000 while Jing Yiu received half of that for the runner-up effort with her yonex badminton racket.
PG’s Chin Eei Hui and PK’s Wong Pei Tty won the women’s doubles tourney after beating SB’s Amelia Anscelly and NS’s Nairul Suhada Abdul Latif in just two games 21-16, 21-11.
The last but not the least, the mixed doubles event title was clinched by Wong Pei Tty and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari after beating Nairul Suhada Abdul Latif and Mohd Razif Latif 21-17, 21-7.
More than RM50,000 were at stake in the competition that took place from September 30 to October 3,2009.
