Anger – the Negative Emotion with Positive Effects
Anger may have some positive effects after all, according to new research conducted by a team from the
The study found that those who did not express their frustration through anger were thrice as likely to feel that they had reached a glass ceiling at work; in other words, they felt that they could not achieve more in their career. This effect was also found to influence their personal lives due to disappointment and constant suppression of emotions. On the other hand, people who vented their anger in a constructive manner were more probable to achieve greater success in their career and have a healthy emotional and physical relationship with their loved ones. The researchers also cautioned that people need to be in control while venting anger, as uncontrolled fury could harm the person’s health and damage his reputation.
Professor George Vaillant, the lead author of the research report said that all of us think of anger as a very harmful emotion and we are advised to think positively, but that hardly serves any purpose as it is a blatant and direct denial of the real world. Emotions, which are considered negative like anger and fear, are natural reactions to a situation, and are very much important for survival. He also says that studies done carefully prove that such negative emotions help us to focus on the things that matter most and if we can master such a skill then we can use it to good effect for greater achievements in life.
