Will Spielberg Ever Stop?
Nobody knows when Steven Spielberg is going to retire from his stellar career, lay back, and let other directors and filmmakers have a crack at getting near him in terms of competition. But it is quite certain that the moment he withdraws from the movie industry, the world of film will never be the same again.
Born on December 18, 1946 to a Jewish family in Cincinnati, Ohio, Spielberg already displayed his passion and flair with the camera. As a teenager, he would make short 8mm films and charge his viewers 25 cents while his sister sold popcorn in their makeshift home theater. He would go on to make short movies while reaping praises for his works. His rise to Hollywood stardom had ensued.
Being the most influential moviemaker of his generation, Spielberg created his own studio, DreamWorks SKG, together with other media main players Jeffrey Katzenberg, former chairman of the Walt Disney Company, and David Geffen, a big name in the music industry who founded Asylum Records and Geffen Records. All three men have Jewish heritage.
With DreamWorks SKG, Spielberg cemented his name in the media and entertainment industry as one of the most successful studio owners in Hollywood. Since its inception in 1994, DreamWorks has consistently produced blockbuster hits both live and animated. From 1999-2001, three DreamWorks’ films won Best Picture at the Oscars: American Beauty, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind. All movies, however, were not directed by Spielberg.
